Faith That Leaves the Building

At New Unity, mission is not an occasional project. It is part of who we are.

We believe the Gospel calls us not only to gather in worship, but to go in service; not only to speak of love, but to practice it; not only to pray for our neighbors, but to become neighbors in the deepest sense of the word.

Jesus met people where they were—in homes and streets, at tables and wells, among the grieving, the hungry, the overlooked, and those pushed toward the margins.

We believe the Church must still be found there.

That is why our mission extends beyond the walls of our sanctuary and into the life of our community.

We Serve Because We Have Been Sent

Our service takes many forms.

Sometimes it looks like food placed into waiting hands.

Sometimes it is standing beside a family in a difficult season.

Sometimes it is encouraging a child, supporting a school, caring for an elder, responding to a neighborhood need, or joining others in the work of justice, healing, dignity, and hope.

And sometimes service is simply being present long enough to see the person the world has learned to overlook.

We do not serve because we imagine ourselves as rescuers.

We serve because Christ has called us to love our neighbor as ourselves, and because every person we encounter bears the image of God.

Mission, therefore, is not charity from a distance.

It is relationship.
It is presence.
It is solidarity.
It is faith with its sleeves rolled up.

From Compassion to Commitment

New Unity has long understood that ministry cannot end at the church door.

Across generations, our congregation has served families, elders, children, schools, neighborhoods, and people facing moments of uncertainty and need.

Some acts of service have been large and visible.

Many others have been quiet, personal, and known only to those who gave and those who received.

Both matter.

We believe compassion becomes Christian service when it moves us from feeling concern to accepting responsibility.

Our Community Is Not Somewhere Else

Baltimore is not simply the city in which New Unity happens to be located.

It is part of our field of ministry.

Its children matter to us.
Its elders matter to us.
Its families matter to us.
Its schools matter to us.
Its neighborhoods matter to us.

Its wounds concern us, and its possibilities inspire us.

Our calling is not to stand apart from the community and diagnose what is wrong with it.

Our calling is to stand within it—to listen carefully, build relationships, recognize its gifts, confront injustice when necessary, and participate faithfully in the work of healing and flourishing.

Schools & Children
Supporting students, families, and educators through relationships, encouragement, and practical care.

Elders
Serving seniors with dignity, presence, practical support, and community connection.

Families & Neighbors
Responding to needs with compassion, respect, and a commitment to walk alongside—not merely drop in and disappear.

Community Partnerships
Working with schools, congregations, organizations, and neighbors who share a concern for the well-being of our city.

Justice & Public Witness
Standing where faith, dignity, mercy, and the common good call us to speak and serve.

There Is a Place for You to Serve

Mission is not the work of a select few.

Every disciple has something to offer.

Time.
Presence.
Skill.
Encouragement.
Resources.
Advocacy.
Compassion.
Wisdom.
A willing pair of hands.

You do not have to do everything.

But every one of us can do something.

Whether serving through one of New Unity’s community partnerships, responding to a particular need, supporting children and families, caring for elders, participating in a service initiative, or bringing your own gifts to an emerging opportunity, we invite you to discover where your life can become a blessing to someone else.

We Gather. We Grow. We Go.

Worship forms us.

Prayer grounds us.

The Word equips us.

Community strengthens us.

And then—

God sends us.

This is the movement of discipleship at New Unity: not simply gathering people into the Church, but equipping the people of God for the work of the Kingdom.

There is work to be done.
