Leadership

Guided by shared calling. Grounded in faithful witness.

At New Unity, leadership is not about position—it is about service, formation, and the work of the Kingdom.

Together, our pastoral leadership embodies a shared commitment to preach, to shepherd, and to build a people shaped by the Word and led by the Spirit.

Reverend Johnny N. Golden, Sr.

Pastor-Servant-Leader

            A Man for the Times

A Servant for the Ages

A voice shaped by faith, fire, and formation, Rev. Johnny N. Golden, Sr. serves as Pastor-Servant-Leader of New Unity Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland.

Since 1994, he has led this community with a prophetic vision, a pastor’s heart, and a deep commitment to building what Heaven has spoken.

Calling & Ministry

Rev. Golden’s ministry has been marked not only by faithful service in the pulpit,
but by a steady presence in the life of the city—and beyond.

He has been twice selected as a Fellow in the Robert Wood Johnson Urban Health Initiative in Seattle, Washington, and was appointed by Baltimore Mayor Martin O’Malley to serve on the City’s Human Services Commission.

He also served as a Fellow in the Urban Crisis Program at the University of Baltimore under Maryland Chief Justice Robert Bell.

And in a moment both humbling and historic,
a street sign now stands at the corner of Polk and Homestead—
marking the place where he was first called to New Unity Church.

A quiet testimony…
that calling, when walked faithfully,
leaves its imprint on the ground itself.

Rooted in Pentecostal experience and grounded in Baptist tradition, Rev. Golden brings a Spirit-led, culturally aware, and theologically rich approach to ministry.

His preaching weaves Scripture, history, and lived experience—calling people not only to believe,
but to become.

Under his leadership, New Unity continues to grow as a place where faith is formed,
lives are transformed,
and the people of God are equipped for the work of the Kingdom.

Beyond the Pulpit

Rev. Golden’s leadership extends beyond the sanctuary
into the life of the city.

He has been actively engaged in community and civic work through efforts such as:

  • C.U.R.E. — Clergy United for the Renewal of East Baltimore
  • I.M.A. — Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Baltimore and Vicinity

His service has also included involvement with organizations such as the NAACP, National PTA, and various boards and commissions focused on community development, conflict resolution, and public service.

A Life Rooted in Faith and Family

A devoted husband to Rev. Wanda N. Golden and a father,
Rev. Golden draws strength from a legacy of faith, family, and formation.

Educated at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, with further study at Howard University and the St. Mary’s Ecumenical Institute,
he continues to embody a life committed to growth, service, and spiritual depth.

A Growing and Equipping Church

Through The Equipping Ministry, Rev. Golden has championed a vision in which believers are empowered to live fully into their calling
and participate in the ongoing work of God’s Kingdom.

His ministry is marked by compassion,
conviction,
and a steady call to faithful witness.

With faith in God
and hope for what is yet to come,
he continues to lead with courage, clarity, and joy—confidently declaring:

“The best is yet to come!”

Reverend Wanda N. Golden

Leading Lady • Worship Leader • Co-Laborer in Ministry

Alongside her husband and pastor, Rev. Johnny N. Golden, Sr., Rev. Wanda N. Golden answered God’s call to serve the family of New Unity Baptist Church.

It was—and remains—a clarion call:
to be premier in worship,

in witness,

and in works.

At the heart of the ministry is a sacred charge:
to equip and empower the people of God

for the work of the Kingdom.

A Calling to Empower

As First Lady and co-laborer in this beloved fellowship, Lady Golden's assignment is clear and unwavering:

  • To empower women and girls to live fully into who God created them to be
  • To affirm their God-given dignity and worth
  • To encourage their voice, leadership, and agency under the guidance of the Holy Spirit
  • To advocate for their sacred capacity to influence change in their lives, families, and communities

This work is not distant—

it is personal,

present,

and engaged.

As Jill Briscoe reminds us:
“Love comes as we serve, as we get involved, as we work closely together.
We need to be near enough to see the tears, to catch the sigh, to touch each other’s hands.”

This is the spirit of her ministry—
not removed, but near…
not passive, but present...

not watching, working in love.

Women in the Ministry of Jesus

"Women," says Lady Golden,

"were never an afterthought in the ministry of Jesus."

He saw them.
He honored them.
He healed them.
He taught them.
And He entrusted them with His message.

  • John 4:7–26  — The Samaritan woman at the well
  • John 8:10–11  — The woman accused, yet not condemned
  • Luke 7:12–13  — The widow of Nain
  • Luke 8:48       — The woman made whole
  • Luke 23:27–31 — The women who wept along His path

In every encounter, their worth was affirmed,

their dignity restored'

and their place in Kingdom work made clear.

A Vision for Wholeness and Witness

The vision is clear and strong:

to support God’s people—especially women—

in seeing divinity in the totality of life.

Like the daughters of Zelophehad,

women are called to move from silence to sacred assertion—

to stand,

to speak,

to claim their inheritance in Christ.

"We are Imago Dei - the Image of God -
We are heirs of promise."

Called to be willing—

and to work God’s good pleasure

(Philippians 2:13).

A Heart for Service

It is Lady Golden's heart’s desire

to please God in all that she does.

Serving the church—

elevating the sisterhood—

and bringing glory to God

through opportunities to bless the people of God

wherever need arises.
