Our Story
A Legacy Rooted in Faith, Growing Through Time
Since 1916 — Celebrating Over a Century of Faith, Growth, and Service
In October 1916, Reverend John Samuel Taylor—affectionately known as “The Singing Evangelist”—gathered a faithful few at 2200 Hunter Street to organize Unity Baptist Church.
Under his visionary leadership, the congregation grew steadily, moving from place to place as God expanded the work—from East 22nd ½ Street, to East 23rd Street, and eventually to 2224 N. Howard Street during the challenging years of the Great Depression.
On October 30, 1955, after 55 years of ministry and 40 years as pastor, Rev. Taylor entered into eternal rest.
In 1956, Reverend James Samuel Williams was unanimously called as the church’s second pastor. Together with his wife, “Sis. Pearl” Wilmore-Stevenson-Williams, he led the congregation through a season of vibrant spiritual, numerical, and financial growth.
In 1967, the church purchased property at 2654 Polk Street and embraced a new name—
New Unity Baptist Church—marking the beginning of a new chapter.
Through every season, God sustained the church through faithful members who became pillars of strength and continuity.
Among them were Sisters Catherine Mosby, Elaine Taylor, Alberta Tillery, Irene Williams, and Rosie Lee Watts Davis—women whose presence and perseverance helped carry the ministry forward.
Deacon David Brown, father of Deacon Thelma Henderson, served as the church’s first deacon, laying a foundation of servant leadership that continues today.
Following Rev. Williams’ retirement in 1989, Reverend Elwood Francis Carroll, Jr. provided interim leadership.
In November 1994, Reverend Johnny Napolean Golden, Sr., alongside Reverend Wanda Nadine Golden and their family, was called to serve New Unity.
Under his leadership, the church embraced a renewed focus:
“Equipping and Empowering the People of God for the Work of the Kingdom.”
In May 2003, under the unction of the Holy Spirit, the church moved to its downtown location at 100 W. Franklin Street, marked by a celebratory procession and ribbon-cutting.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, when in-person worship was paused for 40 consecutive months, the faith of the people remained steadfast.
On February 14, 2024, New Unity entered its current home at
2908 Hamilton Avenue, where the ministry continues to grow, gather, and serve.
As New Unity Baptist Church moves forward, its history stands as a testimony to the faithfulness of God.
With hearts full of praise and eyes fixed on the future, we declare:
“Eyes have not seen, nor ears heard”
all that God has prepared for this chosen, royal, holy, and peculiar people—
called out of darkness into His marvelous light.
To God be the glory.
